I planned the shoot and picked the cutest outfit. The only problem was she refused to wear her pants. This wasn’t a surprise. She pretty much hates pants. And shoes. And socks. Drop by our house any time, day or night, and there’s an excellent chance our daughter will be wearing only her shirt and diaper.

Diaper shots weren’t what I had in mind for Valentine’s Day. So, on a whim I decided to see if she’d wear the pretty pink tutu her aunt gave her six months ago. Until now, she had flat-out refused.

Imagine my surprise when she willingly stepped into it. If you can’t imagine my surprise, well, just take a look at her outfit. That’s a whole lot of pink. Hard-on-your-eyes pink and wholly unplanned. But once I got her in the tutu I didn’t want to stop and change her top. I knew she wouldn’t be long for the tutu.

These photos are nothing like the series I envisioned. Not even remotely. They’re better because they’re so unexpected. They’re so her. So sweet.

Here she is this morning, watching a little Mickey. Totally zoned out. As sweet as I think she looks, I’d much rather see her running around the house like the ball of fire she is.

It’s astounding really. They go from tiny little bundle to miniature person in the blink of an eye. My daughter is not even two-and-a-half and I can barely remember those first 12 months. Seeing these bright, inquisitive eyes and new little teeth brought it all back. It was such fun taking this sweet little man’s first year photos.

Every year I start planning mine sometime around, oh, early July. Yet somehow I never manage to get them out early. Not by a long shot. On time would even be nice but there’s always a breakdown between my planning and execution phases. This year was no exception. I mailed the bulk of my cards out just today, on Christmas Eve.

If you usually receive a card from me but haven’t yet, chances are you haven’t been cut from my list. Assuming the post office stays afloat you should receive it before we ring in the new year. In the meantime, here’s a little preview with some of my favorite photos from 2012.

I’m a little surprised, and a little sad. Where are all the holiday cards? I love The Holiday Card! Granted, I haven’t sent mine out yet. Okay, I haven’t ordered mine yet. But I will, soon.

I did, however, order these for my sister. How sweet are these little guys?

Could this little guy be a future veteran? I’d say the chances are good. There’s a long legacy of service in his family from his father, who is active-duty Navy (like that was hard to figure), to his great-grandfathers, both of whom served during WWII.

He turns two months old today, this Veteran’s Day. I guess he has a few years to decide.
